Basics To Tying A Bow Tie

The bow tie made it’s debut in the 17th century, when King Louis was impressed with the Croatian mercenaries who took his side in the war. The king soon gained interest in their uniforms particularly the loose wrapped ties around their necks to keep shirts closed. He later made the style a requirement for formal functions of the upper class. Named “la cravat” in honor of the Croats that inspired the trend, it is still called that in France today. Traditionally, they were a symbol of sophistication and way to distinguish between classes. Today, the bow tie is no longer reserved just for formal occasions. They are now worn daily by business professionals, entertainers and average men instead of the necktie. Unfortunately, only a small handful of men know the proper way to tie a bow tie.

When shopping for a bow tie, remember when tied it should be smaller than the broadest section of the neck. The commonly used clip-on bow tie doesn’t always fit the collar shape and size. To avoid looking like a clown the bow tie should not extend past the collar. To begin stand in front of a mirror and position the bow tie around your neck with the right side slightly lower. Cross the longer end over the shorter side and pass it through the loop. Double the short end to form a loop in the front and wrap the longer end over the loop made with the shorter side. Next, simply double back the long side on itself then tuck through the loop behind the bow tie. After the basic knot is tied, tug on the ends of both sides to even them out and center the knot. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the hang of things the first try. Remember practice makes perfect.
