How To Tie A Tie

Knowing how to tie a tie is an invaluable life skill. Whether you regularly wear professional attire or hardly ever wear dress shirts, it is a skill you’ll have to use at some point. Tying a tie is a simple operation and takes only a moment. There are several classic ways to tie a tie. One of these is the Four in Hand Knot. With a little practice, you’ll be able to master the art of tying ties. You’ll be able to use it your whole life.

1. Start with the tie hanging around your neck, the wider end hanging lower by several inches. The thick end should be on the right side, especially if you are right handed.

2. Pass the wide end of the tie in front of the thin end, then underneath, and then in front of it a second time. You have created a spiraling effect.

3. Instead of continuing your spiral, pass the thick end of the tie up through the loop around your neck, on the under side.

4. Pass the wide end in between the spiral and the thin end of the tie, creating a knot. The Four Hand Knot is now beginning to look like a proper tie.

5. Push the knot up until it becomes snug, while holding onto the thin end of the tie. You’ve completed tying your tie!
